Students at North Liverpool Academy Sixth Form studying A-Level Biology recently visited Liverpool Life Sciences UTC to see a Scanning Electron Microscope in action.
What is a scanning electron microscope?
A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a microscope that produces high-resolution, 3D-like, topographic images of materials at nano-to-micro scales by scanning a focused electron beam across a conductive sample surface. Operating in a vacuum, it offers superior magnification (up to 300,000x+) and depth of field compared to light microscopes, with applications in materials science, biology, and forensics.
Read our Year 12 student Abdullah's recap of the experience in his own words below.
As a Year 12 student at North Liverpool Academy I recently had the opportunity to visit UTC with my Biology class to use an electron microscope which is something very few students get the chance to experience.
In the future, I am hoping to pursue a career in medicine so this visit was especially important to me. Being able to see cells and structures in such incredible detail helped me understand topics we study in class on a much deeper level and made the science feel real rather than just words in a textbook.

Learning about the different components of the microscope and how it works gave me insight into the kind of advanced technology used in medical and scientific careers. Experiences like this are helping me build knowledge and skills that will support me on my journey into medicine. I am really grateful to Mr Cleaver for organising this amazing opportunity for us.
This experience has increased my confidence in practical biology and strengthened my interest in studying medicine at university in the future. It showed me how important precision, teamwork and technical skills are in scientific environments. Opportunities like this motivate me to work harder, stay focused on my goals and continue developing the skills needed for a successful medical career.
We are looking forward to seeing where Abdullah's journey into medicine takes him. If you would like to attend a Sixth Form that fosters educational excellence in a professional learning environment, apply to join us below.
